Dr. Guy speaks in front of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee on February 13, 2018.

For the past week, NTU President Dr. Elmer J. Guy and Student Senate President Roland Begaye, Jr. were in Washington D.C. along with 35 other tribal colleges and universities lobbying on behalf of tribal higher education. As part of the week, two things were on their agenda:

(1) Rauthorizing and funding TCU Title III, which if eliminated, would cut nearly half of NTU's Title III funding,

AND

(2) Achieving parity for TCU Operating Programs and 1994 Land-grant Programs (for instance, 1862 land grant (state) schools receive $300 million for extension programs, HBCU's or 1890's receive $46 million, and TCU's receive $4.5 million)

Both had met with Senators and Congressmen from New Mexico and Arizona, and both represented the university in the highest regard.

In addition to their work on Capitol Hill, they also participated in a signing ceremony with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a cooperative agreement that will provide students with internship opportunities to increase their knowledge of agricultural career opportunities. The agreement ensures that participation students receive work assignments and experiences in USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service that support the skillets and technical competencies associated with the agency's mission critical occupations.

If you see Dr. Guy or Mr. Begaye on campus, please be sure to thank them for their efforts! NTU. Endless Possibility.
