Navajo Language and Culture instructor Raymond Redhouse shares a story about “Sho loh” and the representation of the sun beams. Mr. Redhouse provided his teachings and storytelling at the NTU community luncheon at the Teec Nos Pos Chapter House.

Teec Nos Pos, AZ – On November 22, 2019, Navajo Technical University’s Instructional Site at Teec Nos Pos, AZ sponsored a community luncheon themed, “NTU Thanksgiving Community Festival,” a free event that included an open registration drive for the 2019 spring semester. Community leaders were excited about the event that was attended to capacity at the Teec Nos Pos Chapter house. NTU representatives were on site to share information about the university and provide updates about the spring semester.

The instructional site was established 7 years ago and has been an integral part of the community as the only university merged with a Navajo Nation Chapter house.

“Our partnership with Teec Nos Pos Chapter to offer college courses has been a success and we could not have accomplished this without the support of the community,” said Dr. Frank Todacheeny, NTU Teec Nos Pos Instructional Site Director. “By hosting events like these we are letting our community know our appreciation for them and it also gives us the opportunity to get them informed about the progress of courses and what is to come from Navajo Tech.”

The Thanksgiving luncheon was well attended with NTU representatives joining the event to recruit students for the upcoming 2019 spring semester. NTU’s Teec Nos Pos instructional site has a steady enrollment with approximately 35 students attending courses during the 2019 fall semester. Chapter officials were obliged by the sponsorship from NTU for hosting the luncheon for its community members.

As part of the event, NTU Navajo language and culture instructor Mr. Raymond Redhouse told a Navajo cultural story about the changing season and preparations that should be considered for the upcoming inclement conditions. Apache County Attorney Micheal Whiting also made his presence as he helped serve while making a campaign for anti-bullying on the Internet. As dignitaries and leaders were being recognized for their contributions, Mr. Redhouse and other instructors from the area were acknowledged for their influences on their students.

Community members fill the Teec Nos Pos Chapter house to capacity as chapter house and NTU officials speak. The community celebration was well attended and everyone as everyone listened to goals set forth by NTU and the Chapter House.

“We encourage our students from the community to take that first step to get their education at NTU, from community events like this,” said the Teec Nos Pos chapter president Alfred Jim. “The site offers our students a place to start college and we see this site growing because we have students that come here from Red Mesa, Montezuma Creek, and Aneth. We just need to offer more courses.”

NTU officials forged a partnership with Teec Nos Pos leadership in 2012 to set up the instructional site at the community’s vacated preschool premises. The instructional site offers vocational courses in welding, construction technology, and prerequisite courses. Registration for the 2020 Spring Semester is now open for all students.
